From Jam to Masque - The Best DIY Beauty App

A few weeks ago I was out shopping in the local market when I saw some healthy-looking strawberries. It reminded me that it was time to make my yearly portion of strawberry jam.

When I was growing up, I remember my gran was a big fan of home-made jam, in fact home-made anything. We baked, cooked, it was important for her that I start my adult life with some knowledge about cuisine.

So now that I am away from home, making jam every year reminds me of that time with my gran.

After making my jam and the necessary brioche to go with it, I had a few lovely pieces of fruit left. I remembered I had an app on my phone, an app that provides recipes for simple, DIY skincare products.

BeautyCraft - 101 DIY Beauty Recipes

BeautyCraft - 101 DIY Beauty Recipes

I got this app years ago and to be honest, I've completely forgotten about it. I’ve become a skincare formulator, I don't need recipes to follow.

How wrong was I!

The BeautyCraft app was developed by Lorraine, a DIY Beauty Diva who is also the director of Formula Botanica, the world's most amazing online Organic Cosmetics Science School. The app is designed to be used by anyone who is interested in natural skin food. The idea is that if you can eat it, you can also apply it on your skin and hair. You will find a collection of 101 recipes that don't require previous knowledge of natural skincare, skills or special tools.

The app has some great features, all of which are to make our lives easier.

1. Search: You can look for recipes in the skincare library just by entering a key ingredient.

2. Categories: All skincare files are organised according to categories such as masks, scrubs, bath products just to name a few.

3. Ingredients A-Z: All ingredients in the recipes are organised in alphabetical order. You will find very useful skincare related information about them.

4. Equipment A-Z: This section helps you check if you have everything to make wonderful skincare using only tools that are already in your kitchen. No fancy stuff is needed!

I opened the app on my phone and a search box popped up. I just entered the word ‘strawberries’ and I found a couple of recipes to choose from.

As I had everything in my kitchen cabinet, off I went to make a Tropical Coconut & Strawberry Facial Scrub.

Here is a step-by-step picture guide to the recipe:

The ingredients:

  • 5 healthy strawberries
  • 1 tbsp desiccated coconut
  • 2 tbsp corn flour
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

(All your ingredients should be organic/bio if possible)

The method:

  • Mash the strawberries to a pulp using a pestle and mortar, a fork or even a blender.

Add the coconut, flour and oil and blend it till smooth.

There you have it. A gorgeous facial scrub with divine coconut and strawberries.

All you need to do now is wet your face and apply the scrub using circular motions. It goes without saying that you should always be careful with the delicate skin around the eyes and lips.

The desiccated coconut acts as your exfoliant and it gently removes the dead skin cells. The strawberries contain natural acids that will also help with this process. It is recommended that you don't use this scrub more than one or maybe twice a week. You can store it on the fridge for a day or two but it is always better to make a fresh batch for each application.

The BeautyCraft app is available in your Apple app store but if you don't own an iphone you can also visit the DIY Beauty Diva website for more easy-to-follow beauty recipes.
